2018 reflection

Skills Cymru Reflection 2018

The future of work is changing, with every element of our lives being increasingly effected by the technological advances that surround us. ESTnet Next Generation (ESTnetNG) are working to ensure young people are equipped with the necessary skills required for the world of work. The exact nature of these future jobs is uncertain, however what is certain is no matter what path the future generations choose, technology and technological skills will play a fundamental part of their future career.

As part of our drive to secure the next generation of talented young people to join the technology industry, ESTnetNG visited skills Cymru to expose the surplus of opportunities available. As representatives of the tech industry in Wales, the ESTnetNG hosted the Interactive Technology Zone in the Motorpoint Arena, which compromised a range of companies, which we believe present the exciting variations and capture the excitement and dynamism of our industry.

CSA Catapult were a core feature of the Interactive Technology Zone and when asked why Skills Cymru was so important to them as a company, they replied;

“We cannot hope to solve the problems of tomorrow armed only with the ideas of yesterday”

Girls at skills Cymru

Our goal was to inspire and motivate young people to take up STEM subjects in school and university and eventually pursue a career in technology. We provided our young audience with a chance to see demonstrations and take part in challenging and interactive activities with these companies to help them decide on a future career. From Compound Semiconductors and Raspberry PiS, Computer Programming and Software Engineering to Advanced Manufacturing and 3D Printing, the stand was alive with technological excellence from some of the brightest and innovative companies in Wales including Newport Wafer Fab, General Dynamics plus other innovative Welsh businesses.

Over 35 schools were recorded at our technology zone over the two days, coupled with parents and teachers, all of which expressing their interest in understanding the pathways into technology. We are pleased to have captured such an engaging and conscientious group of young people to provide us with valuable feedback.

Our feedback asked participants to score their level of interest in pursuing a career in technology, before and after visiting the stand.

From this feedback we found that overall favourability in pursuing a career in tech as a result of visiting the Technology Zone, the ESTnet members who showcased on the stand and their activities, increased the overall audience’s interest in pursuing a career in technology by 23%.
